During the initial design brief some years ago the client asked for an extremely stable vessel in all sea states. We took this to the stabiliser manufacturer that we had chosen and discussed this at length. The final decision was to opt for a 4 fin system, as opposed to a 2 fin system usually found on vessels of this size. Not only does this make it one of the most stable platforms around, it also gives extra redundancy as should there be some issue with 1 fin, we can isolate this from the system and continue at sea with 3.
The stabiliser fin actuator assemblies are currently undergoing installation into the hull penetrations at the highly re-inforced fin boxes. The forces exerted by the fins, which measure over 2m long by 1m tall, is extreme. This requires a great degree of accuracy to make sure the fin will be perpendicular to the hull surface so it will perform as it has been designed. The 2 aft fin assemblies are being installed first, after which the front 2 will be placed.
